Ultra Light Delight

Ultra Portable Rumble has more than one crown at stake

by Juned on March 25th, 2008

It all started when the MacBook Air and the Asus Eee made its presence felt in our world. When these two ultra portables made their debut it was not surprising that they would collide. Even here at b5 there was a bit of an “interesting” debate that started at the tech bloggers egroup exchanges that soon cross-overed to the posts of each tech blog. Needless to say the great debate of early 2006 whether one would prefer an Asus Eee over a MacBook Air ended without resolving anything: Both sides agreed to disagree.

A few weeks distance from the debate and a few more rivals coming in like the Lenovo 300x and Everex Cloudbook showed that market or battle of between the two ultra portable is not limited to one but may actually be two and even more. And both are at the opposite ends of the world of Ultra portables. In other word there seems to be more than one kingdom in the land of Ultra Portables.

The Kingdoms/Markets of the Ultra Portables

The first market belongs to a world where people are looking for reasonably priced note books. And light to carry. So it is not so surprising that here in this realm the Asus Eee reigns (and where the OLPC also lives) and waiting in the wings are the possible contenders to the throne Everex Cloudbook and Intel’s Neo Explorer or Classmate (the name changes from country to country I think).

In the second market: design, features and friends play a very important on who is king. In this realm you will find the likes of MacBook Air, Lenovo x300 and the Sony Vaio slugging out.

So those are the two kingdoms up for grabs in the land of the Ultra Portables. It would be interesting to see what happens in the following months and the next few years.
