Searching for the Green Ultraportable

by Juned on May 14th, 2008

When you scan the specifications and features of ultraportables one rarely finds any Green features. It is small; its fast; some even have face detection security … and some came with special material that makes it look chic.

Mind you the compact size of ultraportables and energy consumption is praiseworthy enough - at least these computers consume less energy. Lenovo seems to have made the effort to have their latest models consume less power than the previous ones. Around twenty-five percent or so.

Still it is not fully Green: It is not Green enough.

What would be the ultimate Green Ultraportable?

Would it be the E1, Aleutia’s 4.5 inch solar powered Linux computer?

Or

Would it be the much anticipated but never seen OLPC with a crank or yoyo?

What would the ultimate Green Ultraportable be like?

First, It should be an energy efficient and completely functional computer: Able to play games; watch and edit different media files; An Internet communication tool; and can do standard office applications - ie word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and database.

Second, It should a power source that is Green and it should be able to recharge with Green technology - solar, air and even crank powered.

I think we are near this point since by their nature ultraportables run on batteries. The only question now is the how to charge the battery with Green Technology.

Charging the battery by solar and cranking might be viable method. And by cranking using a bicycle will improve one’s health geometrically. But we still have to wait till it catches ones.

Till then we wait for the One Green Ultraportable.
