Samsung’s 256GB FlashSSD is two times bigger and faster

by Juned on May 27th, 2008

Good news from Tech Side Up is that Samsung has developed a 256GB Solid State Drive or SSD [Source]. The good thing about this SSD is two: As Tech Side Up Mike said its twice as big as the older model and get this twice as fast. This translates to 200 MBps read and 160 MBps write.

Some more details about this Uber-SSD -

Samsung claims that its 2.5 inch, 256GB multi-level cell (MLC) SSD [Source]:

1. It is the fastest (Around 2.4 times faster than a typical HDD)

2. Thinnest (100.3 by 69.85 by 9.5 mm)

3. Largest capacity (with a SATA II interface)

4. Stable ( It claims to offer a mean time between failures of one million hours).

5. Costs less than a SLC based SSD.

6. Relatively low Power consumption (Only 0.9 watts in active mode.)

7. It has a data encryption (This prevents unauthorized access to data stored and when the SSD is removed from the PC.

Mass production of the 2.5 inch 256 SSD begins by the end of 2008. A 1.8 version is expected to be available by the fourth quarter of 2008.

This is going to be interesting. More interesting than Intel’s Atom. I can see the news and speculations that this product will generate. it is already happening - Samsung intros 256GB SSD that may reach MacBook Air.

Happy times is all I can say at this point.
