How much memory do you use?

by Juned on June 15th, 2008

As I type this post, I am reminded of one precious commodity when we use the computer - memory. A constant reminder of this is when we get the message warning us that we have used up more memory and it is now at the critical point - ie when the computer hangs. This happens often when we use desktop computers and laptops. And I would think this is more critical when it comes to ultraportables and this is because of memory limitations.

Most ultraportables were designed with economy in mind. Everything was sacrificed for the sake of ease and efficiency even memory. So this is one of problems tackled by the digital nomad and ultraportable user. This is further compounded by the fact that a number of ultraportables use Solid State Drives (SSD) - which have a lower number of rewrite cycles compared to the HardDrive - can be used very sparingly.

I rarely use the SSD of my ultraportable. Often I really on thumb drives and memory cards. So I use up as little as possible when it comes to memory space. In the process I use more power but its still manageable.

What is your take on this?
