tonia_mullins.jpgSo you think what applies to politicians won’t on you? That’s the mistake Tonia Mullins made, attempting to hire a hitman to kill his lover’s wife, forgetting that sending text messages create a record of conversation

Don’t care who as long as they can in no way be traced 2 me or u guys through someone else,” the 32-year-old Oklahoma woman texted a would-be intermediary. “Price is going 2 be the big factor here. What r we lookin at?

Apparent Gmail Vulnerability Should Make You Check Your Filters!

gmail-filters.gif

I’ve been using Gmail for over two years now, for a wide variety of reasons (like conversations and inbox archiving for instance). Apparently, so do a lot of domain owners, who woke up one day to find that their online properties were stolen.

Here’s a summary: a hacker manages to gain access to a Gmail account, just enough to modify its Filters. The end result is that any emails sent by the domain registrar—including ones sent due to a “Forgot my Password” request—are forwarded to the hacker. This allows said hacker to grab control of the domain, and demand money for its return.

Thanks to online WhoIS services, which reveal the owner of a website and their email, pulling it off seems relatively easy. I’m honestly not sure if Gmail really suffers from a security flaw, but you can check out the complete details here—and check your Gmail filters just to be safe. It takes only a few seconds after all.

This Week: Palm to Lay off Workers

palm-stock.gifPalm’s suffering was—and continues to be—for the long-haul. And apparently, the financial apocalypse didn’t help matters. Starting this week, some of the company’s 1,050-strong workforce will start having to look for other jobs.

This development is probably a symptom of everything that’s wrong with Palm, who have only managed to secure orders 5% of the business-phone market in the US, compared to RIM’s 75% and Apple’s near-25%. Once again, how the great have fallen! This is the very company that started the whole smartphone thing; look where they are now. But cutting jobs is a way of becoming more efficient. While this could be the beginning of the end for the palm, it might also represent the start of something new.

Ah well, in any case, maybe it’s wise not to apply for the most recent job posting posted on Palm’s corporate website.

Google iPhone App Anti-Brit!

google-mobile-app.jpgImagine sharing a word with voice-recognition software, only to hear system confirm your word as “sex”. That’s what some people with British accents reported about Google’s voice-based search tool, part of Google’s recently released Mobile App for the iPhone:

The free application, which allows iPhone owners to use the Google search engine with their voice, mistook the word iPhone for “sex”, “Einstein” and “kitchen sink,” … “Awesome job google. only problem is every time I say the word ‘fish’ it registers as sex,” wrote one, identified as Kevin.

Check out the app page here.

WiFi FreeSpot Useful for Laptop-Toters, May be Inaccurate

Geeksugar does a great job of reminding us that WiFi FreeSpot maintains a list of free hotspots throughout the US and in some countries. Though I’ve been to the Philippines, and “Manila Int. Airport - smoking area - Luzon” definitely doesn’t carry free WiFi—at least when I was there last. (wififreespot.com)

Wii Beats Xbox 360 and PS3 in Power Consumption Game

nrdc_price_of_play_350x.jpgAccording to tree-hugging journalist Lori Bongiorno, the Wii is a great choice for anyone looking to cut down on the electric bill. Here are the key points of her article:

Sony Playstation 3 is the most power-hungry model. For the 2007 version, you’ll spend about $12 a year if you turn the console off when you’re not using it, compared to about $134 if you leave it on all the time.

Microsoft Xbox 360
ranks a close second. If you shut it down when you’re not playing a game or watching a movie, it costs about $11 to operate annually. Leaving it on continuously will cost you $103.

Nintendo Wii uses significantly less energy than the others. It costs about $3 a year if you turn it off after use, compared to about $10 if you don’t.

Then again, as the obnoxious commenters of Lori’s article point out, who the heck leaves their gaming console on the whole day?!

Atari 2600 Joystick Replica Brings Nostalgia, Reveals Old Age

legacy-usb-joystick.jpegWhen the Atari 2600 first came out back in ‘77, I wasn’t even an itch in my dad’s pants. But I totally understand why everyone went gaga over the system, and why old fogeys still relish their days on the pioneering gaming machine. That’s what I feel for my NES after all.

In any case, this aptly-named Legacy USB joystick mimics the original joystick of said Atari console, but works like any other game controller designed for the desktop. It plugs in with any PC, Mac, or Linux machine via USB, and costs $15. Just like the original, the controller comes with one button, but according to everythingUSB, it’s possible to modify the joystick to accommodate 10 more.
